Institute for Progress

The Institute for Progress (IfP) is a think tank based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to accelerating scientific, technological, and industrial progress, while tackling the institutional barriers that hinder innovation.

The team focus on policy reform in areas such as metascience, immigration, and biosecurity to drive breakthroughs and ensure a prosperous and sustainable future.


The Brief

We were approached by the Institute for Progress, a (then newly founded) Washington DC based think tank, to create a future orientated and optimistic brand identity and website that embodied the unique moment in time in which the Institute launched. The identity had to support the Institute’s long-term aim to be a respected, professional and rigorous organisation able to effectively impact policy on a regular basis.

The Solution

We decided to visually embrace the concept of “progress” as a framework for the Institute’s research. Using a bright colour palette and dynamic, repeating lines to imply constant progression, the developed brand identity is future orientated and hopeful, but also a little surprising. The clear and engaging editorial website effectively plays host to the Institute’s research – providing an intuitive and intriguing online reading space. You can view the live site here. Colour Palette & Visual Messaging

Typography & Iconography

A pair of typefaces are used: a clear, bold and friendly sans serif, and a serif with an air of distinguished authority – together providing an approachable yet professional flavour to the identity. Based on the heavy lines of the logo, a suite of icons was created to illustrate the Institute's various research categories. These abstract, pictorial icons are each paired with an eye catching colour to clearly tag each area of research.

The fluid wave patterns help add dynamic motion to the brand and feel at home in the science and technology world in which the Institute operates.

We created a style guide for the team to produce illustrations in house. This allows them to explore a vast array of subject matters whilst remaining visually cohesive with the rest of the brand.

These interactive data visualisations pull live information from the Bureau of Consular Affairs and the International Trade Administration to shine a light on the lengthy wait times for U.S. visas.
